About
What: I intend to document how I am living the digital life, what devices I use to implement it and any tips or tricks I learn along the way.
Why: I have long had a web page (usually woefully out of date) about my home IT environment. I was originally inspired by a reference by John Dvorak to a website made by John Patrick (former IBM VP) about his use of technology at home. I guess another inspiration is Jerry Pournelles Chaos Manor reviews which I started reading when Byte was a real paper magazine. The big difference between the inspirations and me is my lack of money, or rather, my Scrooge-like approach to spending money on new kit.
Who: I have worked in the IT industry since 1986. I feel young, but I guess I’m what is called “middle-aged”. Even though I have used IT for a long time, I still get impressed by what it can do (when I show my kids, and tell them how cool it is they give me weird looks). As for (almost) full disclosure, it should be noted that I work for IBM (Tivoli Netcool Technical Sales). Tivoli Netcool software is used (amongst other things) to monitor networks and server at service providers around the world. I can’t think of any IBM products or technology I will be commenting on, but just on case: “The postings on this site are my own and don’t necessarily represent IBM’s positions, strategies or opinions.“
